. >> what are you hearing in regard to the fiscal cliff? >> mitch mcconnell has been in negotiations with vice president joe biden. we know they spoke at least twice over night. the last conversation we are aware of was about 6:45 this morning. we don't know the status of those talks. we don't know whether they are its senate offers back or fourth. leaders of both parties have said little this morning. senate majority agree -- leader harry reid came to the floor and did not have much of an update. if there is is going to be a deal today, it will be between mr. mcconnell and mr. biden. there is little in the way of ongoing conversation between mr. reed and mr. mcca mcconnell. >> what about the mechanics of any deal if there is an agreement at least in the senate -- how quickly can come to the floor and how likely is it we can see action on the house floor later today or tonight or tomorrow? >> it becomes tricky. we know what the allies of any deal would be. they have been bandied around for about two years. translating the outline of the deal in legislative language is difficult and t
, avoiding the fiscal cliff and the countdown is only, with only a few days left until the deadline. only have until next week to come up with a deal. this afternoon president obama will hold a meeting at the white house. >> he invited democratic and republican leaders for the talks. we get the latest from sherri ly live at the white house. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they are back at it again today. these are the first face to face talks between the president and republican leaders, and today the president will be meeting with congressional leaders here at the white house from both parties. they are trying to figure out a way to get around this fiscal cliff, and at this point it's not about coming up with a grand bargain. they're just trying to get something done and fast. president obama back in washington, but can he lead both parties to a compromise fiscal cliff work-around? republicans say democrats have been dragging their feet for months and they won't be pressured into what they considered a bad deal that doesn't help balance the nation's books. >> the president calls
intractable debate and that's the fiscal cliff. congress has left town and there's no deal here. senator schumer, the president is now proposing a smaller deal. are we going to avoid the fiscal cliff by the first of the year or not? >> i hope so. if you look at the final positions last monday of both the president and speaker boehner, they were this close, they were this close to a solution. the president was about $200 billion higher on revenues, speaker boehner $200 billion higher on spending cuts. out of a $4 trillion budget, that doesn't seem insurmountable. so i hope they would keep talking. my one bit of advice to speaker boehner is this -- you cannot pass a bill with just republicans. on a broad thing like this, you need both and he has put himself with plan b in sort of an impossible position. he has to get these hard right guys to go along with him. if he were to say and the president were to say we're going to pass a bill with a majority of democrats and majority of democrats in the house and senate we could get a mainstream bill. i know he's worried about his speakership but w
